Andhra Pradesh is mainly an agricultural state but cultivation has been losing favour as a profession due to increasing cost of  agricultural inputs and relatively low yields so people who are depended mainly  on agriculture are looking for other job options.


The women from the sewing centres are mainly agricultural coolies. Since their work  is seasonal they are in need of other  alternate jobs to meet their household expenses. The main aim of Shoshana  sewing projects is to create employment opportunities for  needy girls and women in backward areas by providing them with Sewing, Painting and Embroidery skills .

The training classes are conducted through out the year held for 3 hours every morning and afternoon. At the end of the training each woman is provided with a sewing machine and  a kit to start their own small business.

Shoshana's Medical help at Rosaiah colony, Chirala. . People here are mostly agricultural workers and domestic helpers.

Lack of sanitary conditions and shortage of clean drinking water affecting the health of most rural areas.

Some of the areas are still affected with problems like malaria and diarrhea.

Ananda kumari  - Nurse 

 The colony is far away from the town. Medicines and medical assistance is not available in this area. Even for first aid help people have to go to Chirala which is 5km away from this area.

Shoshana started providing medical help here with a regular nurse (Ananda kumari )at the centre. She is taking care of the basic medical needs.

Free medication and medical assistance specially for fishermen community.

Mr. Asirwadam joined the organization recently to give his services as a first aid helper. He is also working in a private hospital as a doctor's helper.

The medical centre is  close to Ramapuram beach which is 9 km away from the town. Having a regular medical help in this area for medical emergencies is very helpful for the needy people here.

Martha's first  visit to this new medical project after the inuguration. Started recently with Mr. Ramanjeneyulu as the nurse.

First aid help for the Raavipadu village. The nurse is helping the patients to minimize the consequences for sudden illness before seeing the doctor.

The nurse Mrs.Padma is helping the people to consult the concerned doctor who are in need of long term diseases.

Heard from her that she has patients who are detected with Tuberculosis and Leprosy. She is helping them to have regular follow ups with the concerned doctor.

The poorest needy residents in this area are getting the basic medical assistance and medication at the centre itself.

Happened to meet one of the former students who is interested to become a tailoring teacher. She is making products like bags with jute material and other handicraft stuff. She is also an expertise in embroidery and painting. She is willing to teach the women these skills besides stitching.

Some of the women from this sewing course  are working for their livelihood so keeping in mind their daily schedule it takes about 6 to 8 month to finish their training. Later they are provided with a sewing machine on a small credit.

Shoshana has two sewing and two medical projects in Narasaraopet town at different  areas and the pics from all the four projects.

Sewing project at Shalem nagar

The instructor Mrs. Santhamma with her present group of students. All these women are married and housewives. Some of them finished their school and some are illiterates. Husbands are the only earning members in the family. In order to get along with the household expenses women also need to work. For them it is difficult to find a job with their minimum education. They could only work for a few days in fields as a coolie .

With this new found skills these women can earn their  livelihood and become financially independent. The instructor is encouraging the women to use thoroughly this need based programme so that they could be self employed in no time.

Shoshana sewing Centre, Giripuram, Vijayawada.

The instructor Hemima has a group of previous students who asked for  extra classes. She has time in between to start new batch for Stitching training which is going to start in Jan-17 so she took students from different classes who are in need of some extra practice.

The local society who is in charge of Shoshana sewing centre, Giripuram also requested for medical help in this area. It is one of slum areas of Vijayawada with lots of old  people with long term diseases. Shoshana started giving medical assistance and free medication for a limited section of poor people.
