Pics from Shoshana Sewing Centre, Guntur.
Area: Venkatappaiah Colony

Instructor Anitha with her students.

Shoshana started helping the needy women in this area for the last 7 years and so far  around 60 women got benefited with the free tailoring course as well as with a sewing machine on a small credit. We make it a point to know their family details so that we could help them in all possible ways. The instructor is careful in picking up the women because majority of them come from similar background. In them it is necessary to choose the ones who are in desperate need of support.

Want to share the story of one of the students of this Sewing centre.  Her name is Annamani. Finished her schooling and got married at an young age. Husband also is not much educated, he is a construction coolie. She is living with her three daughters in a rented house. In cities it is a must that both  the couple have to work to run the family.

Her elder daughter is mentally challeged and because of medical negligence she lost both her legs.Totally depended on her mother. Also in need of medical help once in a while.Annamani has two more small school going girls.  As of now it is not possible for her to go to work with these kids and husband is the only earning member.

The instructor Anitha picked her for the free training class with the intention of helping her for her self help so she could  work from home besides taking care of the household work.  Earning some money on her own gives her the possibility of meeting her elder daughter's special needs.
Also we are finding the possibilities of how we could help her daughter.

Pics from Shoshana Computer centre, Guntur.

Shoshana started computer centre in Guntur with the main intention of helping needy boys and girls in urban areas too.  Centre started nearly a year back with the help of some like minded volunteers who came forward to give computer education to needy students to those who cant afford to pay the high course fee for advanced and job oriented courses.

Chandra is the computer instructor. He has been working as a computer teacher in different institutions for the last ten years. The society and the instructor select the beneficiaries and for the maintenance of the centre they collect a very meagre amount as fees.

Pics from previous students who finished their training class in Shoshana sewing project,Bapatla.

Rajeswari finished her training class  an year back and Shoshana provided her with a sewing machine.

Her parents - Father had an accident and is handicapped . He is struggling to set up a small shop at home.Mother, domestic helper is taking care of the family.

Elder sister is married and younger brother is still in school.
With the training she got from the Shoshana sewing centre, Bapatla, Rajeswari is now able to help herself as well as supporting her mother in running the house.

Ammulu, school drop out finished her training class two years back and now with the help of Shoshana she started her own shop at home in Bapatla.

Father is a rickshaw puller, mother is a coolie. Living in a small rented house, it is necessary that every one has to participate in running their house.

She is happy that the training she got from the sewing centre is helping her to be independent besides helping her parents and her other siblings.

Manjula, instructor with the new group of women

These new group of women started their sewing class in December-15.

Majority are married, housewives.  Most of them are without basic education, coming from families who are agricultural coolies, construction workers etc.

Shoshana, not only providing them with a free  class but in our follow ups we see that they make use of the training.

Pics from Shoshana Medical Project, Burlavaripalem.

Burlavaripalem is a remote village which is 4kms away from Chirala town and it is close to the sea. Shoshana recently started its medical support in this area and we have a regular medical centre for the last one year.

The village is surrounded with fields and  auto is the only means of public transport to the village and  they are available only in day time . Village still needs some basic facilities like proper roads, electricity and toilets. When we started the medical centre in this village, there was not even a small provision shop and medical facility was completely out of reach. Even for basic medication , people had to travel all the way to Chirala.

Now people are very happy that they have a regular first aid help in their locality. The nurse Mrs.Mariamma is living in this area for the last 20 years. She has the experience of working in some private hospitals. People could reach her all day long for medical help.

Unfortunately, three months back, the nurse lost her husband. He was a cancer patient leaving behind three teenage children. The nurse, Mariamma is the only earning member in her family. Inspite of all the circumstances, she stood strong and is  taking care her family as well as the villagers basic health needs.

Hi

Would like to share few new pics from one of our sewing projects in Chilakaluripet.

Started with the intention of helping some needy women for one batch at Vengal reddy nagar area which is close to Chilakaluripet .  For women who are mainly illiterate/ school drop outs, mostly working as coolies and some housewives. Coolies are seasonal workers so in order to provide them an alternate work helping them to work at a tailor shop or at home.

Started in January-2015. First group of women finished their training. Have to provide them with sewing machines asap so that they can start working.

Instructor Bennykumari(Orange saree) with new group of women

First thought of free training course for only one batch but more needy women came forward to take up the class.

After the distribution of sewing machines for the first group, follow ups will be there in the regular visits to find out like how far they utilize the classes for their self help and what else the people need in this area for their better living.
