Pics from Shoshana Medical Centre, Gaddipadu, Guntur.

One of the backward areas on the outskirts of Guntur. Kamala who is an instructor at Shoshana Sewing project, Gaddipadu,Guntur is also a trained nurse.  She is giving first aid help and basic medication for the needy people in that area. Areas with open drains and having unhygienic conditions are prone to more diseases. Shoshana is helping them to get an access to the basic medical help and also awareness about the hygiene and health.

Nirmala, the tailoring instructor at Gaddipadu, Guntur has been giving free sewing classes to the needy women in guntur for the last 16 years in different areas with the support of Shoshana.

Primary objective of this training program is to create employment opportunities to the disadvantaged women coming from rural and slum areas.

At the end of the course each woman is provided with a sewing machine to start their own business.

The beneficiaries are selected based on their economic conditions and their interest towards learning the skill. So far Shoshana helped more than 500 women in Guntur in getting the free training and still there are more needy women who are in need of help.

VISIT TO SHOSHANA SEWING PROJECT IN PEDANANDIPADU AND ANAPARTHI VILLAGES

Sharing a few pics from the Shoshana sewing project, Anaparthi and Pedanandipadu villages.

Martha's first visit to the sewing project, Anaparthi  which was started early this year. Women had a little celebration time inviting Martha to the project.

Occupation wise most of these women are daily wage agricultural labourers and their men are construction workers and contract farmers. The job availability in agricultural sector is only for half the year and rest of the period they go to nearby areas for coolie work.

We choose the needy women who are unemployed and who are interested to learn the handicraft skills to train them in Sewing and Embroidery work and help them in buying a sewing machine so that they could also earn some living  and could support their families.

If both the parents are working,
more children will be able to attend school instead of forced into child labour.
Mrs.Sivakumari is the instructor for sewing at Pedanandipadu and Anaparthi. She is running a tailor shop at home with the help of some of her former students there by providing some income for them and they also sell the products made by the women at the centre which they in turn use for their utilities.

Visit to Shoshana Medical Centres, Yanadi colony, Kadavakuduru and China ganjam village

SHOSHANA MEDICAL PROJECTS AT KADAVAKUDURU AND CHINA GANJAM VILLAGES

Martha's first visit to the Shoshana Medical project located in the Yanadi colony of Chinaganjam village.
I am putting up a few pics from her visit.

Shoshana Primary health centre was started in this area to give awareness about personal hygiene and health issues besides giving basic medication for the people here.

This is mainly a tribal community with main occupation as sewage workers, fishermen , coolies and rickshaw pullers. Open defecation due to lack of sufficient water and domesticating pigs and goats at home causing unhygienic surroundings is mainly leading to health problems and maintaining their waste water by digging pits in the backyard attracting mosquitoes is also making them sick.

Shoshana Medical Centre, Giripuram, Vijayawada.

Shoshana started giving first aid medical help in Giripuram area for more than 2 years now. Medical Project first started as a temporary help besides the sewing project but since there is more medical need in the area  it is turned into a regular medical centre with a full time nurse.
Main problem in this area is over crowding. Sharing a single room with more than 8 members. It encourages spreading of diseases. With un hygienic surroundings and poor living conditions make them prone to diseases easily.

Area lacks proper  sanitation facilities. Common toilets that are used by the people are not connected with proper sewage systems.

Most of the people here are construction workers, house maids etc. Alcoholism and drug addiction is also one of the main problems.

Majority of the children are drop outs and old people are neglected.Since they are in need of regular medical help, having a first aid help is very useful for them.

Mrs. Yashoda is a trained nurse. She has been working in a private hospital for many years. She is giving medical service in this area.

Shoshana sewing centre, Driver's colony,Bapatla.

Shoshana was the first organization in its area to introduce the concept of self help groups in the year 2010 and since then the program has expanded a lot .With the financial support of Shoshana the local society has organized more than 8 groups each with 8-10 members.

The present group has majority of muslim minority women who are illiterates/semi illiterates coming from low economic status. Large families and husband being  the only working person,  the entire family has to face financial hardship. Usually  women are not allowed to go out for work.

The goal of this program is to help these women for their better family welfare and independence by promoting income generating programs so that they have a strong and permanent improvement in their economic conditions and more children will be able to go to school instead of being forced into child labor.

Each woman is provided with a sewing machine after completing their training in sewing and embroidery for nearly 10 months so that they are able to start working on their own.
